Jealousy
The
ringing of the phone wakes you up. You turn to see why your
wife hasn't picked it up, and you see that her side of the
bed is empty. You pick up the phone. A man asks for someone
you don't know. Wrong number, you tell him, and you hang
up. But his voice sounded familiar. Your wife should have
been home by now. You call her unit, and they say she left
a few hours ago.
Suddenly
the door opens. You hear her moving around in the kitchen
before she comes to the bedroom. You ask her where she's
been, and she says that she was buying groceries for the
week. She didn't call because she didn't want to wake you.
"Well," you tell her, "you should have told
your boyfriend not to call, either." She looks at you
blankly. She's not going to indulge you on that subject.
She undresses and heads for the shower. You pick up her
uniform from the floor and sniff it for traces of aftershave.
